The economy cannot afford Eskom's revised request for a tariff increase of 35 percent every year for three years, the Independent Democrats said on Wednesday.

"The 10 percent drop from 45 percent each year for three years is a start, but it is clear that this figure is still too high for our economy and consumers to bear," Lance Greyling, ID spokesperson on energy said in a statement.

The party was "extremely concerned" that the government was still not tackling the root cause of the country's energy problems, which was the weak state of energy governance and departments working at cross purposes with each other.

Greyling said it was imperative the country had proper, integrated energy planning before tariff increases were imposed.

The goverment needs to show strong support and subsidies for Solar Power, Solar Geysers & Solar Water Heating.

Sadly, Eskom's trials (many) and tribulations (few) have left the state monopoly with no choice but to embrace the private sector for Solar products. Eskom's generating capacity collapsed in a heap early in 2008, panicking the nation and raising the threshold of worries among the foreign investor community. Suddenly, privatisation is quietly invited in all over.

Makwana stated that there is an "assumption that a private equity partner for the Kusile project will be introduced within 24 months". Kusile is going to be a big base coal-fired generating plant.
